Almost a year after the fact but i’ve finnally extracted the hardes ammonite. The ammonite (12cm) was embedded in the rock for more than 70% and the shell was intact on some parts and turned to pyrite on other parts. I’ve ordered some stonesculpture tools and after splitting the stone ive mannually chiseled out the ammonite. The Gastropode (4cm) was in a lump of clay and an unexpected suprise. Al in al it turned out pretty nice considering I have little to no experience.

From the lookout-post i took a few pictures of the fire that is sweeping through fochteloerveen. (a peat bog in the Netherlands) The smoke can be seen from Assen and direct accessroads to the area are closed off. Although the fire is far from the lookout you have an excellent view from there.
The young blackbirds in the nest are still quiet but mom and dad keep bringing in food. At the end of the day the young birds are fast asleep allowing the parents to stay away longer. Time for me to grab the video camera to take a look into the nest. Four healthy young blackbirds are asleep so: good job mom and dad blackbird!
I’ts old, but still fun to post (the video); In 2009 we went to Italy for our summer vacation spending our first week in a tiny vacation home near Napels with a stunning view of the ocean. There were two downsides though, first off all the fog was thick way up there in the mountains so the view was wasted. Second; the access road was not asphalted and just wide enough for one car and just about wide enough to turn when you reached the end. In the end we survived the week without denting or scratching our BMW, only to return from shopping, one week later in Tuscany, to find big dents and scratches in one of the doors.

In my previous blog i reported there is a bug with the Nokia E72 that has been there from the beginning. One they seem unable to fix. If you want to use Gmail through IMAP on the E72 then it happens that after 1 or a few days the account stops synchronising. After this you can only fetch or send your gmail manually. luckily someone found a workaround for this.
I’ve had the Nokia E72 for about a year now, a nicely and designed smartphone. Aside from one little bug in the email configuration (that they still havent fixed in the last year, there is however a workaround.) I am really pleased with this phone. The free navigation software from Ovi is really good and worked wonderfully. I said ‘worked’ because when i tried updating the maps last week i ran into a commen problem. Ovi Maps will startup just fine but then after a few seconds closes without any message or error.

It has been a while (yes, nearly a year!) so it is time for a new update! Last year we visited normandy for the first time. Loved the scenery, impressed with the WII landing beaches and musea and searched for fossiles. Searching for fossiles was a huge succes and we arrived home with 4 big boxes filled with all sizes fossiles. A big numer of those are now de-salted, cleaned and carefully preped and sealed. Preparing the fossiles is really new for me so it was a real learning project. We found lots of belemnites and ammonites!
This year we are planning to go to Sommerset and searching for fossiles will be high on our priority list. Pictures of the (prepared) fossiles will (hopefully) follow soon.
